On the Dnieper
The next list set we have is for the Eastern Europe
The military history of Ukraine was shaped by its position between powerful and often competing states. Much of the region fell under the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, where the Ruthenian nobility and Cossack communities played crucial military roles. The Zaporozhian Cossacks emerged as a formidable frontier force, renowned for their mobility, use of light cavalry, and riverine warfare from their base on the Dnipro. They launched raids into Ottoman territories and defended the steppe borderlands against Tatar incursions.
The 17th century was dominated by the Khmelnytsky Uprising (1648–1657), during which Cossack forces sought autonomy from Polish authority, winning major early victories at Zhovti Vody and Korsun. The conflict drew in the Crimean Khanate, Muscovy, and later Sweden, initiating the period of political fragmentation known as ‘The Ruin’.
