Suggestions and Comments after 1605 Play Test
« on: August 26, 2019, 06:18:40 PM »
So, we just did Poles v Swedes in 1605, which I posted on FB. Here are some the questions and comments:

1. Artillery deployment - since guns are deployed first and then it takes a Red to change their facing, we think a free facing change for artillery who are not behind barricades should get a free wheel immediately after deployment. After all, they are there watching the enemy deploy and it would seem reasonable, especially of there is then a big gap in the enemy line with nothing to shoot at.

2. An Unsteady characteristic - Units break at 50%. It is complementary to Stead and represents troops that are proficient but not strongly dedicated. Some mercenaries in the Italian Wars come to mind.

3. Obstacle does not seem to be defined in the rules, actually, but it is an option on the Army Builder. I think all of those should be grouped together in the definitions, rather than spread out. So maybe the general term is Barricades (since that is how it is shown on the QRS), and then they are all described as different types under the Barricades definition.

4. Just to confirm, units in Skirmish are not destroyed if contacted by non-skirmishers in the open.

5. Are there any special rules for Early P&S, like can't be flanked? If not, then maybe they should be a little cheaper than later P&S to reflect the additional rank that is not really doing anything except absorbing losses?

6. We seemed to remember there being a KaB test for charging artillery but could not find it. Maybe just an old discussion?

Some suggestions for consideration

1. Troops can break off from slower opponents (only slower ones) during the movement phase, but this always costs a KaB. This would allow Mounted to charge and hit then immediately run back without having to suffer through melee phase. The small, expensive units could rarely last for a melee phase, if things are that bad.

2. Later infantry fighting in 3 ranks get to shoot full effect from a single rank. The unit size is 4. This would nicely reflect three rank lines longer frontage and better fire power versus the deeper formations in 6 with a 3 frontage.

Anyway, it was a fun battle and things seemed to work as we expected. Still have not had a chance to try the new infantry factors fully, but certainly Poor P&S behind obstacles are no push over!  :P

AS ever thanks for the report, love reading them

1) Thats already in the rules, its a free backward wheel on either front corners
2) Like the idea will look at
3) Will sort
4 absolutely right
5) No special rules they were just the transition from the tercios to the new pike and shot
6) No kab thats MEg just an upgrade in shooting

1) No break offs are after melee
2)Will look at

1) Ah, we missed that. Thanks.

1) Yes, that is how we play. This is a possible suggestion to allow faster troops to break off before the melee. Just a thought.

Thanks for considering our ideas!

Best,

Rob
