Rear attack
« on: November 21, 2024, 11:42:21 PM »
If a unit starts fully behind an enemy unit’s rear what area of the enemy does it have to contact  to constitute a rear attack? If it hits a rear corner for example.

Hitting the rear corner is NOT a rear attack

If you qualify as per p.175  you can claim it

I definitely was in a starting position that met the criteria as being eligible for a rear charge. I had first charge and made a wheel during the charge with one file contacting the  rear of one enemy base while the second contacted the rear corner of the next. It seems from what Simon says that I should have been eligible for two attacks counting as in the rear.

According to MeG the contact on the Rear Corner is a Flank not a Rear: no matter where you start relative to the target. It is a matter of where the Rear corner counts as, not your starting position and it is defined as counting as part of the Flank. It may of course be intentionally different in ReG.

Mind you how you qualify for a flank attack in MEG is different from REG. easier to qualify in MEG.
I think my opponent would not accept it as he was in Colunella albeit a Colunella which was leaving its rear totally exposed.

Just to clarify the diagram. My charge made an initial wheel then straight ahead which resulted in one base contacting the rear corner and the second base hitting the rear side of a base so two bases made contact.

In REG we do differentiate the 'zone' more between Rear and Flank, than in MEG (unless its changed - which may be possible, as it has been a while. Looking at Keils in MEG even then expressed Flank in term of 'edge'). P 175 is what defines these areas and really the key point is the starting position of the charge (more than the final location). So, for example -

Green - Rear
Red - Flank

Thank you. That clears it up for me. Now to tell Hunter.
